Lines, Shapes, and Meaning
نویسنده
چکیده
Lines are mysterious. They are drawn by the hand, they are seen by the eye, they appear in the world. Lines are what the hands draw, what the eyes see, and what the page represents. Lines form forms. Simple regular visual/spatial forms like dots, lines, and containers, have meanings that are readily apparent in context. They are used in the service of clear communication, to self and others, notably in diagrams and gesture. They are used to organize, indeed to diagram, the world. Other, messy sketchy lines are used for exploration and discovery.

OPTIMAL NOZZLE SHAPES OF CO2-N2-H2O GASDYNAMIC LASERS
In an axisymmetric CO2-N2-H2O gas dynamic laser, let ? denote the intersection of the vertical plane of symmetry with the upper part of the (supersonic) nozzle. To obtain a maximal small signal gain, some authors have tested several families of curves for ?. To find the most general solution for ?, an application of Pontryagin’s principle led to the conjuncture that the optimal ? must consist o...
متن کاملThe Role of Labels in the Automatic Assessment of Graph-based Diagrams
Graph-based diagrams include geometrical elements of differing shapes connected by lines to carry the semantics of the domain being modelled. Some diagrams also use the relative location of elements to express information. Labels play a central role in providing meaning both as identifiers, distinguishing between geometric elements, and the values of attributes of elements. Such information is ...
متن کاملThe Semantics of Shapes: A Study based on Mandarin
Mandarin shape nouns, such as afanglxing2 'square' and sanljiao3xing2 'triangle', share a set of very interesting lexical semantic features. These nouns can refer to either the contour (i.e. the outside edge) or enclosed area of the shape. In this paper, we will try to explain this lexical semantic fact both in terms of the cognitive theory of grounding and the visualization. Our study will be ...
متن کاملAnalysis of Flow Pattern with Low Reynolds Number around Different Shapes of Bridge Piers, and Determination of Hydrodynamic Forces, using Open Foam Software
In many cases, a set of obstacles, such as bridge piers and abutments, are located in the river waterway. Bridge piers disrupt river’s normal flow, and the created turbulence and disturbance causes diversion of flow lines and creates rotational flow. Geometric shape and position of the piers with respect to flow direction and also number of piers and their spacing are effective on changing the ...
متن کاملAffective Priming by Simple Geometric Shapes: Evidence from Event-related Brain Potentials
Previous work has demonstrated that simple geometric shapes may convey emotional meaning using various experimental paradigms. However, whether affective meaning of simple geometric shapes can be automatically activated and influence the evaluations of subsequent stimulus is still unclear. Thus the present study employed an affective priming paradigm to investigate whether and how two geometric...
